Assassination attempt on Yambio commissioner prompts investigations
Authority in Yambio says it has launched investigations into a plot to assassinate County Commissioner Hussein Enoka by unidentified armed men.
Mr. Enoka survived an assassination attempt on Thursday last week after armed men fired bullets at his residence according to official sources in Western Equatoria State.
“The unknown gunmen came on a motorbike and started shooting at the house of the commissioner of Yambio County and they ran back after the bodyguards fired back,” William Adriano Baika, Western Equatoria State Minister of Information told to City Review in an interview.
According to the Information Minister, the Police Criminals Investigative Department had launched investigations into the matter.
“There is an ongoing investigation from the CIDs to know who is exactly behind the attack on the commissioner’s house,” Baika said.
“I spoke to him (commissioner) this morning, the good news is that he is safe. The situation is calm and under control, people are going with their normal business,” Baika added.
Efforts to reach the commissioner himself were not successful but he was earlier on quoted by a local media confessing that he survived an assassination attempt on Thursday night.
Enoka said the unidentified men opened fire on his room but quickly vanished after his bodyguards repulsed them.
“When the bodyguards shot back, the attackers decided to run away,” said Enoka.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear but there has been an increased attack on homes of government officials in the area.
Two weeks ago, the home of the mayor of Yambio town, Singira John, was attacked by gunmen.
Meanwhile, two months ago, a bodyguard of Western Equatoria state Minister of Health was killed after armed men reportedly tried to break into his house through the window.
In August, the former Tombura County Commissioner Babiro Charles Gbamisi was killed in an attack in his home by an armed group.
