The South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) is gearing for elections on July 22, 2021 to usher in new leadership steered by a new president for the next four years.
Although the stage is set and the atmosphere communicates the ambience of an electoral duel amongst the contenders, the numbers of those who vie is yet to be public, and the candidates are yet to declare their interest formally.
Francis Amin, the incumbent president of the association whose term in office expired on May 17, 2021, will also be expected to contest for another term, according to the SSFA Sectary-General Victor Lawrence Lual.
Notwithstanding recent positive developments, including establishing of women football league and South Sudan Cup of 2021; challenges abound for whoever will take over the position.
What’s in the tray?
This includes, among others, the development of the country’s football infrastructure, building the capacity of the national team and soliciting fund for the association.
Mr Lual told the City Review that SSFA has lots of expectations on whoever will take over the office come July.
“We believe he will cover lots of things because we are part of the world football [and] we need to be like other countries…to have strong league so that players from other countries can come and play here,” he said.
Other challenges will include advocating for elimination of negative norms and beliefs that hinder development of women football in the country. Beside it is the bid to complete the establishment of women league in all the ten states, including Upper Nile and Jonglei states and three Administrative Areas of South Sudan.
Lual said lack of enough funding to cater for the transportation and accommodation of players has been another a major challenge hindering the association’s progress.
“The champion of the ongoing tournament (South Sudan Cup) will represent South Sudan in the Confederation Cup to kick off in September -Though the matches are going smoothly, we are facing challenges of transportation and accommodation,” he said.
“Also, we need to have good marketing [for] our brand to the world. We also need to have good plan. We already have a strategic plan that needs its implementation,’ he said.
The next incumbent SSFA president will ensure the association has enough funding for running of its activities and women football teams in all the ten states of South Sudan.
“For our football to grow we need to involve sponsors to sponsor our league. We need to have a good national team because if you have a good league you will have good players,’ he further said
