UNISFA urged to provide road patrols in Abyei

The leadership of Abyei has urged the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to provide road protection to ensure the safety of the people from external aggressors.

This came after the alleged Misseriya militias ambushed a vehicle between Amiet market and Abyei town, where two innocent civilians, including a driver and a passenger, were killed.

Three other people were also injured and rushed to Ameth-Bek Referral Hospital in Abyei.

“The Abyei Area Administration condemns this resumption of these kinds of barbaric attacks on Abyei Amiet Market Road in the strongest terms possible and calls upon UNISFA to immediately resume the routine road protection as has been the case earlier, “the Spokesperson, Ajak Deng Miyan said.

Abyei Administrative Area has been facing a notch higher aggression from the neighbouring Misseriya, with whom they are expected to hold a referendum to decide whether to live together as Sudanese or secede to join South Sudan.

Last week, the council of ministers meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir resolved to send forces to provide security in Abyei.
