The United States Ambassador to South Sudan, Michael J. Adler, has called for effective governance and responsible use of public resources to deliver on the aspirations of the South Sudanese citizens.
Ambassador Adler issued the statements during his meeting with the Vice President for the Service Cluster, Josephine Lagu Yanga in Juba.
The U.S diplomat emphasized that one of Washington’s top priorities in South Sudan is ensuring that government revenues are used appropriately, particularly to guarantee the regular and timely payment of public sector salaries.
He highlighted that salary payments are not only a matter of financial management but also central to service delivery, stability and public trust in institutions.
“The United States’ priorities in South Sudan include peace, appropriate use of public revenue, especially for the payment of public sector salaries and a favourable environment for U.S. entities, persons, and partners to work,” Ambassador Adler stated.
He further noted that the delays in salaries undermine the morale of civil servants and the functioning of essential services such as healthcare, education and public administration.
“The proper use of resources and prompt payment of wages are critical for sustaining government capacity and for ensuring that South Sudanese citizens receive the services they deserve,” he added.
Ambassador Adler said the U.S. is also committed to supporting South Sudan through humanitarian assistance apart from the financial aid, while expressing the aspiration that stronger foundations of governance could pave the way for deeper trade and investment ties in the future.
On her part, Vice President Josephine Lagu Yanga noted the Ambassador’s concerns and assured him of the government’s commitment to improving resource management.
She added that effective governance and timely salary payments are essential for both stability and development, pledging that her office would continue working with relevant institutions to address the challenges.
“The Government of South Sudan values the strong relationship with the United States and welcomes continued cooperation in the areas of peace, service delivery and economic development.”
“We remain committed to ensuring that public resources are used transparently and that salaries are paid to strengthen confidence in government institutions,” Ms. Lagu said.
South Sudan has been grappling with delayed salary payments since its independence.
