Two men commit suicide over poverty in Mundri

At least two men have committed suicide in Lui Payam of Mundri East County in Western Equatoria State last Saturday.

In a phone interview with The City Review on Monday, Mundri East County police inspector 1st Lt. Samuel Jenessio said the two men hanged themselves on Saturday night in separate locations.

“It was an unfortunate incident that happened on Saturday night in Mundri East County, where two men committed suicide, one in Lui Payam and the other one in the Jambo area.”

“A man identified as Amuza Luka, 61 years old, hanged himself in Jambo, while a young man, known by his name as Eriden, hanged himself in Lui. That is exactly what happened,” Jenssio  explained.

The police attributed the cause of the suicide to poverty as the two men had been complaining and informed their family members about it before they both killed themselves.

“When the tragedy happened, we (the police) made some inquiries with the family members but the information we got was that the late told one of his sisters those things have grown hard for him because he cannot handle them, and he feels like leaving this world.”

According to the Mundri East police inspector, the deceased sister never took it seriously, and it was at that time that they discovered in the morning that he had hanged himself.

Jenessio further added that the late Luka was a former employee of Lui Hospital who had retired a few years ago, leaving him without a source of income.

“Eriden Samuel, who hanged himself in Lui Payam, wrote down his reason for suicide, stating that he now has a lot of money owed to him and that he has nothing to pay those individuals since they keep disturbing him,” the police officer disclosed.

“That was exactly what he had noted down before he hung himself.  So, in short, the two men were traumatized and stressed and the conditions they were in, was so terrible that is why they hanged themselves,” he added.

However, he said the investigation was ongoing and if some new information emerges, they will let the public know.

A 20-year-old Eriden was a former employee of Afro Canadian Evangelical Mission (ACEM), an organization that seeks to improve nutritional supplements in greater Mundri communities.
