Rumbek, South Sudan – Two people were killed and ten others injured in a road accident on Tuesday involving a military vehicle transporting a sick soldier from Malek Payam to Rumbek State Hospital, Lakes State authorities have confirmed.

According to Lt. Moses Machuoc, the Deputy Director of Traffic in Lakes State, the vehicle belonged to the organized forces and was en route to Rumbek when it veered off the road and overturned between Anyijong and Lang-Cok.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle, which was speeding when it hit a pothole,” said Lt. Machuoc. “It overturned, killing two passengers—a man and a woman—on the spot. The vehicle was carrying 12 passengers in total.”

The remaining ten passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. All the injured, including the driver, were rushed to Rumbek State Hospital for treatment.

Dr. Teran Madit, Medical Director at the hospital, confirmed the casualties and provided more details. “We received the victims around 2:00 PM, about three hours after the crash reportedly occurred at 11:00 AM. The deceased—a man and a woman—were pronounced dead on arrival. Several others were treated for head injuries and limb wounds, with some requiring immediate resuscitation.”

Lt. Machuoc blamed reckless driving and over speeding for the tragedy, warning that such negligence continues to cost lives. “We’ve consistently advised drivers to observe traffic rules and drive cautiously. Sadly, many continue to disregard these warnings. This accident is a tragic consequence of that.”

Authorities continue to caution motorists, particularly those operating government and military vehicles, to prioritize passenger safety and avoid high speeds on poorly maintained roads, especially in rural areas.
