Subramanian appointed new UNMISS Force Commander

Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian has been appointed the Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The appointment was made by United Nations chief, Antonio Guterres.

 General Mohan is an Indian national.

Guterres hailed the efforts of Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar of India for his valuable contributions to UNMISS Force Commander.

 “Lieutenant General Subramanian succeeds Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar of India to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his tireless dedication, invaluable service and effective leadership as UNMISS Force Commander,” read the press release.

Lieutenant General Subramanian has a distinguished military career with the Indian Army spanning over 36 years.  Most recently, he served as the General Officer Commanding, Military Region (Operational and Logistic Readiness Zone) in central India, contributing to the Army’s operational and logistic preparedness. 

Subramanian had been serving in the Indian army for 36 years. During that time, he served as the General Officer in Command of Military Logistics in Central India, Director General for Procurement and Equipment Management at Inidan Ministry of Defence from 2019-2021, General Officer in command of Strike Infantry Division (2018-2019), Deputy General Officer in Command of Infantry Division (2015-2016), Commander of a Mountain Brigade (2013-2014), according to a press release on the UNMISS website.

He was also the Indian Defence Attaché to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (2008-2012) and the Staff Officer with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone in 2000. 

He holds Master of Philosophy Degrees in Defence and Management Studies, and Social Sciences.
