SSFA presidential race heats up as two contenders fall short

Two contenders for the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) presidency have been dealt a blow after the fitness test upon the scrutiny of their credentials.

The Electoral Committee on Saturday, July 3, released the final list of the candidates running for the association presidency and deputy presidency after the curtain fell on the period for submitting documents on June 30.

According to the committee, a total of six submissions were received for the position of SSFA presidency and five applications for the vice presidency. A total of 14 applications were received for various positions on the board.

In a press conference held by the SSFA Electoral Committee on Saturday, at SSFA headquarter, the secretary for the SSFA Electoral Committee, Abdallah Delesuk, revealed that out of six contenders, only four of them were able to meet the requirements put aside by the committee.

“The committee after having examined the candidates in accordance with article 8 of SSFA Electoral Code, 2012, (amended 2021), has unanimously decided to publish the initial list of the candidates,” Delesuk said in the statement seen by the City Review.

“Lual Maluk Lual, Peter Achuil Adoding, Augustino Maduot Parek, and incumbent SSFA President Francis Amin Michael were the candidates their names were approved by the SSFA-EC,” he added.

This meant that Shafiq Gordon Ali and Yohanis Musa Pouk had to drop off for failing to meet the eligibility criteria.

VP contenders sail through

Delesuk said the applications by the candidates running for the position of vice president sailed through unanimously after the committee realised that they had no shortcomings of compliance.

“In the position of vice president, we have Makur Majok Kariom, Charles Udwar Ukech, Deng Munyluak Monjour, Abdalrahaman Chol Yel and Venasio Amum Deng Ajak,” he stated.

Clement Louis Anthony—the vice Chairperson for SSFA Electoral Committee— noted that anyone who is not satisfied with the decisions of the electoral committee is given the chance to appeal to the Electoral Appeal committee.

“Appeal against any decision of the electoral committee is allowed but it shall be lodged only to the Electoral Appeals Committee, and any appeal or objection duly [filed] shall be sent to the General Secretariat of SSFA,” he said.

He warned that, ‘‘any person seeking to appeal or object shall present their memorandum of appeal or objection in a prescribed manner, as such, disclosing the subject matter and section of law in breach’’.

According to the committee, the appeal day started on July 4 and ends on Tuesday, July 6, 2021.
