Soldiers on mutiny arrest Burkina Faso president

A section of mutinous Burkina Faso soldiers has arrested the country’s president Roch Marc Christian Kabore, citing failure to support the security forces to combat insecurity.

According to AFP, the soldiers began the mutiny on Sunday as they called for the sacking of top military personnel, whom they accused of failing to provide the necessary support to fight the jihadist insurgency.

On Monday, a helicopter was seen hovering around the residence of the president in Ouagadougou, the country’s capital, and thereafter, gunshots were heard before they nabbed the head of state.

“President Kabore, the head of parliament and the ministers are effectively in the hands of the soldiers” at the Sangoule Lamizana, one of the officers from the barracks in the country’s capital told was quoted saying by AFP.

Kabore won the seat in 2015 on a platform that he would roll out the fight against the jihadist, but since then, nothing substantial has been done to stop the bloodbath.
