Shinzo Abe : Ex-Japan PM shot at twice while giving a speech

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has collapsed into a coma after he was shot at an event.

The ex-premier was shot at twice while delivering a speech in the city of Nara.

His attacker,  identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, has since been arrested.

Ex-Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe said in a tweet that the 67-year-old Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, a term used in Japan before a death is officially confirmed.

Abe is understood to be in a coma.

Report from the hospital indicate that a bullet is still stuck on the right side of his neck. He suffered subcutaneous bleeding under the left part of his chest, according to BBC.

“Former prime minister Abe was shot at around 11:30 local time (02:30 GMT) in Nara. One man, believed to be the shooter, has been taken into custody. The condition of former prime minister Abe is currently unknown,” chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told was quoted by the BBC.

“Whatever the reason, such a barbaric act can never be tolerated, and we strongly condemn it.”

Abe was giving a stump speech for a candidate in Nara when the attack happened.
