A security guard manning Radio Good News in Rumbek was found dead in the compound of the Rumbek Diocese-owned radio.

Confirming the incident, Lakes State police spokesman Maj. Elijah Makuac said the deceased was found hanging on a rope inside the room where he stayed.

“The body of the deceased was taken to Rumbek State Hospital for postmortem, then later handed over to the family for further procession. Investigations that were carried out by the police have so far shown that there was no related association to threat to the deceased and possibly it was a case of suicide,” Makuac said.

However, we are still conducting investigations to gather more details. We have detained the staff director and the in-charge on duty in the premise when the guard died to help us with investigations.

Dr. Terran Madit Terran, a medical doctor at Rumbek hospital, said they received a body in the morning at 8am, with the authorities saying the deceased had died for suspected suicide. The body was taken to the mortuary.

“Following the examination of the body of the deceased, we noted some strains and marks of a rope around the neck. There were no bruises or sign of physical assault all over the body, apart from the marks and strains of the rope around the neck,” the doctor said.

The doctor said it was an unfortunate incident, especially considering that the rates had slowed down in the region, without any significant cases reported to the hospital.

He said most of such cases are related to the challenges people go through due to tough economic situations. “Things are difficult at the moment. We all know the situation across the country is hard. A lot of things need to be done as I had stated sometimes back. It needs joint efforts to manage the issues,” he said.

He urged stakeholders to come together and try to solve the issues because most of them are psychologically related and everyone has role to play to tame the incidences.

Angelina Adhel, the chairperson of civil society organization network in Lakes State, upon hearing of the information, says she went to the hospital to follow up for more details.

“I feel so bad about the incident. I actually went to the hospital to witness and inquire as to why this gentleman may have committed suicide,” she said, and added that she had known the deceased as a quiet individual.

“He was a common face. I think many people know him. I don’t really know may have happened overnight that made him commit suicide,” she said, and appealed to government and non-governmental organizations to create more awareness in the state.

“Suicide is not the solution to solving life’s real problems. There are many avenues that can be considered to avoid such a decision.”

“I would like to send my condolences to the family and the entire Radio of Good News staff for the unfortunate loss. I ask the state government and organizations operating in the state to create more awareness and come up with solutions to end suicide cases,” she said.
