School girls in Western Equatoria ordered to shave hair or else…

No school-going girl from Western Equatoria State will be allowed to step into any learning institution with plaited hair, the government has said.

According to the state’s Minister of General Education and Instruction, the keeping of long hair has been cited as among the major factors hindering education in the area.

State minister Grace Apollo Musa said that all girls in primary and high school will no longer keep long hair. The minister argued that the decision was taken to differentiate school-going girls from those who have either completed basic education or dropped out of school.

“I do hereby issue this ministerial order No. 01/2022 for both primary and secondary schools in Western Equatoria State. This order is applied to all the public, private and faith-based schools,” Grace said in a memo to all head teachers.

“The county directors, all Payam supervisors and all the head teachers of both primary and secondary schools in Western Equatoria State are directed to ensure implementation of the ministerial order,” noted Musa in a memo.

She argued that the decision will help promote quality education in Western Equatoria State, especially for school girls.

“The order aims to enable school girls to concentrate on their education and to create a difference between school girls and non-school girls in the state,” she added.

Consideration is only given to all ALP female learners.
