The joint border committee tasked with addressing border clashes in Kajo-Keji has started its mission, a local official has said.
Speaking to The City Review on phone yesterday, Kenyi Joseph, the Acting Press Secretary in the office of Kajo Keji County Commissioner said a high-level delegation of military officers from the two countries visited areas disputed by communities and which experienced the recent armed clashes.
Joseph revealed that the high-level military committee from the region met with government of Central Equatoria State in Juba and top SSPDF command before visiting Yumbe and Moyo Districts of Uganda that share border with Kajo-keji in order to have critical understanding of the borderline.
“Yesterday we received a team from the Great Lakes region. These high-level military members from that region came as a result of the incident that happened on July 28th that led to displacement of the people in that area where there was a UPDF incursion into the South Sudan territory,” Kenyi said.
“After the incident, the Commissioner was able to write a report, comprehensive blueprint to the governor explaining the details of the incident. Our army commander, who is here also, also wrote his report to his superiors at Bilpham (SSPDF army headquarters).”
Kenyi said the team started their mission on Monday, meeting the military commander of Uganda before proceeding to Juba where they also met the military commander in Juba.
“They concluded the meeting with the governor of Central Equatoria State then drove over to Yumbe District, where they met the leadership of Yumbe District. The leadership of Yumbe District escorted them to the disputed areas. After that, yesterday, they arrived in Moyo District. you know, Kajo-Keji is bordering two districts of Yumbe and Moyo. There was a misunderstanding about the borderline,” he stated.
Kenyi further stated that the ongoing activities by the committee is a clear show that the two governments of South Sudan and Uganda are serious in finding a final solution to the shared border insecurity and clashes.
“For us in Kajo-Keji, we see this as a way that could culminate into a final nail that will seal the coffin in terms of border conflict. These problems have been here, we have seen high delegations visiting and trying to find out the challenges.”
“So, with this visit to Kajo-keji, we believe that something, at least a little bit of change is going to come out. We have also received reports that there are key military leaders from Juba and South Sudan who have met in Gulu. Maybe today (Tuesday) or tomorrow (Wednesday) they will reach here,” he said.
On 20 August,2025, South Sudan and Uganda’s top military chiefs met in Kampala, the capital of Uganda and pledged joint efforts to resolve the tensions at the shared border.
