Rubkona women disobey President Kiir’s order, kick off dredging exercise

​Hundreds of Women in Rubkona County, Unity State have started dredging Naam River.

Using rudimentary tools like hoes and spades the women began work this week contrary to earlier directives by President Salva Kiir ordering suspension on an​​y talks or activities until proper environmental assessment is done.

“Hundreds of women turn out in big numbers today. They are clearing Naam River using local tools.

“There are few men participating,” Peter Bakuony, the press secretary in the office of the governor – Unity State told City Review.

A public consultative forum on the feasibility studies kicked off on July 11, two days after the president’s order.

The planned digging of Jonglei Canal and dredging of Naam River and other tributaries has been criticized by a section of environmentalists led by Prof John Akec..

Prof Tag Elkhazin, an expert in environment studies and a member of the panel of experts said that they will need more time to come up with a proper report.
