President Salva Kiir in Nairobi for regional peace meeting
President Salva Kiir is among the regional heads of states presently gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, to chat the way forward for regional peace.
Also present at the high-level meeting is Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Evariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), Salva Kiir Mayardit (South Sudan) and Felix Tshisekedi (DR Congo) and Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta, the co-convenor of the Peace process.
Kenyatta is also the chairperson of the East Africa Community (EAC).
Tanzania Presidnet Suluhu Hassan is represented by the country’s ambassador to Kenya, High Commissioner John Stephen Simbachawene.
Of key focus at the Heads of State Conclave will be the acceleration of ongoing regional efforts to attain sustainable peace and security in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to insiders, the meeting is expected to discuss the conflict at the border of Rwanda and DR Congo.
DR Congo officially joined the seven-member regional block –EAC in May this year.
South Sudan became a full member of EAC on September 5, 2016, barely five years after it gained independence from Sudan.
