President Salva Kiir is expected to attend the second African Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia next week.

Ethiopia will host the Africa Climate Week 2025 from September 1 to 6, under the theme “Dialogues for Ambition and Implementation.”

The event will be immediately followed by the Second African Climate Summit from September 8 to 10, in which the President Kiir, will take part.

Both events are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of climate action at the continental and global levels.

Address a press conference on Thursday, Ambassador Kuereng Akuei, Director General for Multilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed President Kiir’s participation in the Second African Climate Summit.

He stressed that the summit represents an important opportunity for South Sudan to express its positions and highlight the challenges it faces amid climate change.

Ambassador Kuereng further said that South Sudan’s delegation will have the chance to present the country’s current climate change crisis.

“The decisions to be adopted by the summit will be beneficial for South Sudan, particularly in addressing challenges caused by climate change, such as the floods that recently affected Fangak County in Jonglei State.”

The event to take place at the Addis Ababa International Conference Center, will host about 1,500 delegates representing governments, regional and international organizations, civil society, and experts.

Africa Climate Week will feature high-level consultations, side events, exhibitions, and knowledge exchanges, with its outcomes feeding into the Second African Climate Summit and contributing to the agenda of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP30, scheduled to be held in Belém, Brazil.

These two events provide Africa with a critical platform to present its climate agenda on the global stage, ensuring its priorities are reflected in international negotiations while mobilizing climate finance to address the impacts of climate change.
