The Patriotic People Party (PPP) has hailed President Salva Kiir for defusing tensions in the country following the killing of the SSDPF General. David Majur Dak in Nasir.

In a statement released yesterday, Biar Akol Michael, the spokesperson of the PPP said President Kiir, through his wisdom, was able to avert what could have escalated into another devastating civil war.

He noted that the recent unrests allegedly spurred by some elements of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) under the guise of the White Army posed a grave threat to the national security.

“Yet, President Kiir’s measured response has once again proven his commitment to preserving the fragile peace that the nation so desperately needs,” he said.

Akol praised the brave commanders and soldiers of the armed forces who paid the ultimate price in defense of the country.

The PPP extended their sympathies to the youth of the Nasir community, saying many of whom were misled by false narratives and mobilized to resist legitimate government efforts to restore order in Upper Nile.

Akol said that the PPP recognizes that the White Army does not speak for the entirety of the proud community, as many of whom yearn for peace and progress alongside their fellow South Sudanese.

However, he said President Kiir’s call for calm on March 7, following the Nasir attack, and his stand not to let the nation spiral back into the abyss of 2013, reflect a leadership attuned to the perils of division.

On a positive note, Akol mentioned that the PPP cannot ignore the broader context of South Sudan’s peace process.

He said the Tumaini Initiative, launched in May 2024 under Kenyan mediation, sought to bring holdout groups into the fold but faltered by July when the SPLM-IO and others raised objections.

The PPP spokesman said that despite their unwavering commitment to unity and reconciliation, they found themselves sidelined in this process, a disappointment compounded by the dismissal of key parties.

Akol noted this exclusion overlooked their tireless efforts to bridge divides and foster a cohesive national identity.

He highlighted that PPP’s exclusion from prior initiatives has not diminished their resolve but rather strengthened their determination to contribute meaningfully.

Yet, President Kiir’s measured response has once again proven his commitment to preserving the fragile peace that the nation so desperately needs,” Biar Akol Michael, the spokesperson of the Patriotic People Party (PPP).
