President Kiir declares 3-day mourning period in honour of late Peter Gatkuoth

President Salva Kiir has declared a three-day of national mourning following the death of former Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Peter Manawa Gatkuoth.

Gatkuoth died on June 19, in Cairo, just two days after he was evacuated to Egypt for specialised treatment.

He had complained of chest pain.

A casket carrying his remains arrived in Juba on Monday, June 27 and headed straight to Midan (Ground) Simba for a public mass.

Manawa will be buried in the same ground. 

President Salva Kiir led top government officials to the mass where the public also go an opportunity to view Manawa’s body.

“W are now mourning a young man who died prematurely. We have lost a great man.

“He (Manawa) has left behind a family. If you come across them, take care of them. Give them whatever they need,” said the President.

President Kiir further directed the flag to fly at half-mast in all government institutions, adding that the nation will observe a three-day mourning period.
