NilePet halts Bentiu construction projects amid ravaging flooding
The Nile Petroleum Cooperation (NilePet) has decried the impacts of ravaging floods in the country which it says has affected the construction of a road leading to an oil refinery in Unity State.
The Managing Director of NilePet Eng. Bol Ring Muorwel who visited the site in Unity State to inspect the local refinery said several obstacles have derailed smooth progress of road construction between the oil field and the fuel refinery.
He stressed an urgent need for the construction of the pipeline to transit the crude from GPOC to the refinery.
“Rain and floods across South Sudan have seriously affected our plan for the construction of a road to the refinery but as we are coming to the end of the rainy season the road construction will resume ensuring that refined products reach the market within and across our borders,” Ring said.
In a statement seen by The City Review, Eng. Ring emphasized the significance of having a local refinery, saying it minimizes the dependency on the neighboring countries’ fuel imports.
“This will facilitate economic renaissance in the country through rapid industrialization, agricultural revolution, and emancipation in different aspects of economic stability,” he said.
“Fuel scarcity will be something of the past if the local refinery officially starts operating as main fuel supply center in South Sudan,” Ring added.
Ring said Nile Petroleum will construct huge storage in all the 10 states to ensure surplus and reliable supply chains across the country.
“The refinery is not only to bring money, provide currency or stabilize our economy but also it would help create more job opportunities to thousands of youths in the country,” he stressed.
The rehabilitation of the road linking the oil field to the refinery in Bentiu to ease the transportation of the crude oil to the major refinery started in April 2021.
The first phase of the construction started from Wunrock to Bentiu oil fields according to the report by the management of NilePet.
