The Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Bak Barnaba on Tuesday held high-level talks with the World Bank Group Country Manager for South Sudan, Mr. Charles Undeland, in Juba to strengthen cooperation between the government and the Bank to support economic recovery and sustainable development.
According to the Department of Communication and Media at the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the discussion centered on deepening the continued partnership between the two institutions. Both sides reviewed ongoing projects financed by the World Bank and explored new areas of collaboration aimed at improving service delivery and boosting economic growth.
The meeting discussed the World Bank’s essential projects being implemented in South Sudan, specifically in the areas of health, education and water.
These sectors remain critical to improving living standards and addressing urgent humanitarian and development needs across the country.
In a media briefing following the meeting, the bank’s Country Manager, Charles Undeland, outlined plans to expand support in infrastructure and connectivity.
He said they are planning to finance the building of a fiber optic line aimed at improving internet connectivity and lowering the prices in the country’s energy sector.
The proposed investment is expected to improve digital access, enhance communication systems, and reduce operational costs for businesses and households.
Charles reaffirms the unwavering commitment of the bank to supporting South Sudan’s government in its efforts to address economic challenges, emphasizing the importance of deepening this existing collaboration in multiple sectors to achieve the desired goals.
He underscored the Bank’s long-term engagement in South Sudan and its readiness to work closely with national authorities to promote stability and inclusive growth.
During the meeting, Minister Dr. Bak reiterated the government’s steadfast dedication to economic stability.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining strong partnerships with international financial institutions to support reforms and strengthen public financial management.
The Minister highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to address fiscal pressures, stimulate investment, and expand essential services to citizens.
Both parties agreed that collaboration in infrastructure development, digital transformation, and social services would play a key role in advancing national priorities.
They stressed that improved internet connectivity and affordable energy are important foundations for private sector growth and innovation.
The meeting also reflected broader efforts by the Government of South Sudan to engage development partners in supporting reforms aimed at transparency, accountability, and economic diversification.
