Maridi footballers escape death in grisly car accident

Several Maridi County players survived death by a whisker after a car they boarded got an accident on Sunday.

The players were travelling from Mundri West County to Maridi County after participating in the inauguration of the Amadi Super League.

Mundri West commissioner, Zilipher Dawa, confirmed the incident to The City Review on Monday, saying the accident left several players nursing their wounds.

She said the vehicle carrying the players overturned just five miles away from Mundri West County, in between Mundri and Katobi Payam at around 5 pm.

They were immediately rushed to Mundri PHCC, while those who were critically injured have been referred to Lui Hospital for further treatment.

Dawa stressed that the players were in Amadi for the Super Cup before the accident, and they performed well. She said despite being knocked out earlier in the competition, they were allowed to attend the finals.

“The players sustained serious injuries [and] most of them [were] seriously injured. We thank God that they are alive. I have been checking on them even as we speak. I was from Lui hospital, and some of them came together with me here in Mundri West,” she said.

The official added that most of the players who have been admitted to the Lui Hospital and Mundri West Primary Health Care Centre have already been discharged after recovering from serious accidents.

“We [are] only left with a few people at Lui Hospital who are recovering well, they still need some rest. Maybe tomorrow they can be better. But according to the medical report, there was no serious damage to those who [are] still under medication, ” Dawa stated.

The Amadi Super League was formed to unite four counties in the Greater Mundri region. The tournament [is] aimed at promoting peace, unity and harmony among the youth of the four counties.

Maridi, Mvolo, Mundri East, and Mundri West are the four eastern counties of Western Equatoria State that make up the Amadi Super League.

The major objective of the Amadi Super League competition is to assist youngsters and communities of the four counties to live in peace and harmony.

Mundri West County FC emerged as the champion of the Amadi Super League after defeating Mundri East County FC 2:0 during their final race on Sunday.
