Man killed for failing to pay $0.29 alcohol bill

A 23-year-old Ugandan man has reportedly been killed for failing to pay the alcohol bill after consumption. According to the Daily Monitor, Fred Ainembabazi Obadia from Rukungiri District in Western Uganda visited a local bar and ordered a drink worth UGshs 1,000, and after consumption, the deceased is said to have escaped without payment.
The Ugandan media reported that Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Elly Maate, said the bar manager engaged other individuals who chased the deceased and caught him at a private compound in Bugarama Village, in Nyarushanje Sub County.
He was assaulted and left for dead. The deceased was rescued and rushed to Kisizi Mission Hospital but he succumbed to the injuries inflicted by the assault.
“They tied him on a tree and beat him into a coma before one of Bagasheki’s neighbour’s contacted police,” Maate was quoted saying.
Police have arrested three suspects in connection to the crime. They are Ambrose Ensinikweri, Harriet Bagasheki and Nancy Komugisha.
“We have three people in our custody. I want to condemn this act as unlawful and ask the public to always use police and other authorities instead of taking laws in their hands because the police were put in place to help Ugandans,” Mr Maate said.
