JUBA – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) Political Bureau has officially terminated the membership status of the group that joined the Kit-Gwang faction.
The decision was taken after a Political Bureau meeting chaired by Dr. Riek Machar on Friday to formally withdraw the membership status of those who have resigned from the party.
Obtained by the City Review, the resolution of the meeting endorsed the resignations of Mr. Henry Odwar, who was the Minister of Mining, and Mabior Garang, who was the Chairperson of the National Committee for Information and Public Relations as of October 2020.
Mr. Odwar pledged allegiance to the SPLM-IO Kit Gwang faction under the leadership of Simon Gatwech Dual about three days before his resignation from the government while Mr. Garang has gone mute on politics.
A document shared with City Review says the Political Bureau also acknowledged the decision of Mr. Manasseh Zindo and other members who endorsed the Kit-Gwang Declaration.
“As such, they have lost their membership per the SPLM(IO) Constitution,” The statement reads in part.
SPLM/IO Constitution Article 10.5 states that, “the member(s) shall lose his/ her membership if “engages in activities that undermine the objectives and policies of the Movement”.
The SPLM IO also called for a fast-tracking of the formation of the unified command, graduation, and deployment of the unified forces.
“We call upon the peace partners to adhere to the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement in letter and spirit,” the document says.
The embattled opposition group also condemned the unilateral formation of the government of Ruweng and Abyei Administrative Areas and urged the chief Administrators to rescind those decisions and adhere to the power-sharing agreement on Administrative Areas.
