Law Review Commission table revised draft of Criminal Act

South Sudan Law Review Commission (SSRLC) tabled the first revised draft of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, 2008 before the law stakeholders.

The commission is seeking the input of the law institutions and personnel to ensure the development of laws that are responsive to the complex needs of the country.

The acting chairperson of the commission, Changkuath Diaiu, said it was a high time for him and his staff to meet with the “law scientists” to discuss the development and the challenges of the law reform process in South Sudan.

He made the remarks during to discussion yesterday in Juba. It was attended by UNMISS department of rule of law, and among other institutions.

On the other hand, the consultant of the SSLRC, Karlo Kiir, said” the workshop is consultative on initial research on the review of code of criminal procedure Act, 2008.”

He said the initial research covered all chapters in the code includes the proposal to delete of some words or phrases, a new section to be added and proposal for some procedures which our act does not cover.

Speaking at the same event, the Dean of the School of the Laws at the University of Juba, Deng Awor, said it is a good initiative from the SSLRC to call for the review of the draft law.

He urged them to organise another workshop to allow them enough time for discussion and come out with better ideas.

“The constitution that the government uses currently is not clear whether it is Islamic laws, common laws, or civil laws and promise to do my best with my colleagues in Juba University to provide what we can,” Deng said.
