The government of Lakes State has introduced a labour card to inspect all employment procedures within the NGOs operating in the State.

In an interview with The City Review on Wednesday, the State Minister of Labour and Public Service, Chol David Majuac said the labour card expires after a year, after which one will be required to renew it.

According to the state minister, the card will have all records of unemployed youth and help them find jobs.

The card contains details of the employees, academic qualifications, and work experience, if any.

“We understand that currently people get employed based on connections, others get it through their families, but the labour card helps us identify how one gets employed and on what basis,” Chol explained.

Chol further said that even after one applies for a job and gets shortlisted, records are kept on what qualifications one was employed on.

He also clarified on the payment of the document, saying the ministry charges SSP 20,000 for the paperwork.

He said everyone can afford to help the job seekers and eliminate the habit of hand-picking employees, where people are being employed based on connections and not their capabilities.

“The major challenge in South Sudan is that jobs that are supposed to be done by the nationals are being given to foreigners, even though these jobs are classified as for nationals. That’s why we took a step to issue the labour card to monitor the situation.”

“Jobs of experts can he done by anyone, middle-skilled jobs and manual jobs should be done by the citizens, which is not being implemented. So, the ministry is taking action to do Labour inspections in all organisations to see the number of workforce and see the employment categories of the nationals, foreigners, and also the youth from the states and other parts of the country,” Chol state.

The minister said Lakes State is very concerned about the high rates of unemployed youth in the country, and they have taken it upon themselves to address the vices in their State.
