Kiir to launch public consultations for truth commission
President Salva Kiir is expected to launch the national public discussion on the establishment of the Truth Commission on April 5, 2022, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs has confirmed.
The start of national public consultations will result in the formation of the long-awaited Commission on Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing (CTRH).
Speaking to the media yesterday, Justice Ruben Madol Arol, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs stated that the outcome of the consultations will serve as the foundation for the passage of legislation to establish the Commission on Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing (CTRH) in accordance with the provisions of Article 5.1.1 of the revised peace agreement.
Chapter 5 of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, 2018 provides for the establishment of transitional justice institutions, among them, the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing (CTRH).
The Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU), by resolution on January 24, 2021, triggered the implementation of Chapter 5 and mandated the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to establish a Technical Committee in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 5 of the Agreement.
