Kiir right to suspend dredging, canal digging plans, says Ayen

The decision of whether to dredge rivers and dig the Jonglei Canal is a national one that must encompass widespread top-tier consultations, the Chairperson of the Council of States, Mary Ayen, said.

Ayen, after the deliberations, the recommendations will be channeled to the political institutions such as the National Parliament, the Council of States and the Office of the President for execution.

“The issue of the Bahr el-Ghazal and Jonglei Canal begins with public consultations and is subject to scientific discussions now by scientists and specialists, and then it will be taken to the political bodies,” she said.

She warned against unnecessary speculation on the dredging issue, as he praised the decision initially taken by the president to suspend any exercise till feasibility studies are conducted.

The debate surrounding the dredging of the rivers and the digging of the Jonglei Canal has elicited discourse, with the political class exhibiting a different view from many other citizens.
