Kiir fires finance, interior ministers
President Salva Kiir has relieved the Minister of Finance Athian Diing Athian and the Minister of Interior Gen. Paul Mayom Akech through a Republican Decree read on state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation.
Kiir appointed Agak Achuil, whom he relieved from the position of the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in a separate decree, as Mr Athian’s replacement.
Athian was appointed in September 2020 after Kiir dismissed the then Minister of Finance and Planning Salvatore Garang amid public outcry on gross incompetence and graft.
The outgoing minister stepped in when civil servants had gone for over four months with paychecks. Athian leaves the office as the country’s third minister of finance since the transitional period in 2018 and the eighth minister since independence.
In another decree issued Friday night, Kiir appointed Mahmud Solomon as the replacement to the interior minister Mayom.
Gen. Mayom was appointed in March 2020, a month after the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity was ushered in.
The President did not give reasons for the removal of the senior officials.
