Kenya’s third president, Mwai Kibaki, is dead
Emilio Stanley Mwai Kibaki, who served as Kenya’s third president from 2003 to 2013 is dead.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Friday that Kenya’s third president died aged 90.
Kibaki (pictured) is credited with reviving Kenya’s then-ailing economy when he took over from President Daniel Moi, who had ruled the East African country for 24 years.
Kibaki’s tenure was marred by deadly violence that erupted following his disputed re-election in December 2007.
Kenyatta has ordered a mourning period to honour Kibaki, during which flags will be flown at half-mast.
