Kenyan man boiled to death at steel plant

A family of a 25-year-old Kenyan man is coming to terms with the death of their son, who allegedly fell into a metal boiler and died on Friday.

According to Daily Nation, Caleb Otieno who worked at the Blue Nile Rolling Mills Limited, a metal company based in Thika, Kiambu County, was on duty when the unthinkable incident happened, leading to his death.

The Daily Nation revealed that the circumstances of Otieno’s death were scanty, as Kenyan police were still investigating the matter. Some sources claimed that the deceased had his gloves stuck on some scrap metals that pulled him into the boiler with molten fluids heated to 1500 C, hence, his body liquefied.

However, his brother, John Agwambo, said the family was treating his death with suspicion and would only arrive at a conclusion after the investigation is complete. Mr Agwambo faulted the company for playing a part in the brothers’ death.

“The company is not willing to tell us what happened or own up that our brother died within their factory and take responsibility. Caleb Otieno’s death is suspicious. His colleagues told us that he died after he fell into a boiler while working. Nothing official has come from his employer,’’ Agwambo told Daily Nation. The area police boss pledged an immediate probe but ruled out the possibility that the deceased may have been pushed to his death.

The family members are said to be demanding to be allowed to access the boiler to retrieve the remains of their kin for burial.

‘We just want the authorities to intervene and compel Blue Nile Rolling Mills Limited to give us access to the boiler and see whether we can salvage anything for burial. The employees who were working with our brother have told us that our brother was burnt and absorbed into the metal boiler. He was completely liquefied,’’ Mr Agwambo said.
