Juba Monitor editor-in-chief arrested

The Editor-in-chief of Juba Monitor Newspaper, Anna Nimiriano, has been arrested for allegedly defying a court order suspending the operations of the media house.

Speaking to The City Review in the morning, one of the senior staff of the Juba Monitor, who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed the arrest.

“Right now, we are at the newspaper premises, and our editor-in-chief, Anna Nimiriano, has been arrested. They have taken her to the Juba Central prison. “

“We are planning to go and visit her at the prison, and we hope she will be released because the case is already in court,” the source said.

According to the information obtained from the Juba Central Prison, Ms. Nimiriano was handed over to the facility on Tuesday evening.

On April 13, 2022, the Kator High Court in Juba ordered the Juba Monitor Newspaper to stop publication until the final ruling of its case.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Mujahid Abdalla Akol, said the Juba Monitor and Grand Africa Media Services Company (GAMSCO) would be closed until the court passes the final ruling on the case.

The case is between heirs of the late Alfred Taban Logune and others versus GAMSCO shareholders.

Also, the court directed the appointment of three people, two from the side of the litigants and one from the court, to protect the assets of the newspaper and the company.

The case is expected to be heard on April 25, 2022.
