IGAD praises member states for excelling in Tokyo Olympics

Intergovernmental Authorities on Development (IGAD) has hailed member states for their participation in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympic games.

The IGAD council of ministers made the statement in its communique of the 73rd emergency extraordinary meeting on issues affecting South Sudan.

This comes after Kenya was been ranked the best among the African countries that participated in the Tokyo Olympics games. Kenya scooped 10 medals including 4 Gold, 4 Silver, and 2 Bronze which was a historic achievement for the IGAD member states.

Uganda and Ethiopia brought home four medals each. Uganda won 2 Gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze while Ethiopia received 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze.

“IGAD congratulates members states and the athletes representing the region at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics 2020 Olympics whose feats of athleticism and spirit of sportsmanship at emblematic of the concept of healthy competition and a credit to the region,” the statement read in part.

The regional bloc said the gain was for all IGAD countries and described it as “very appreciative” for reprinting the region on the African map and the world at large.

However, South Sudan and its neighbour Sudan returned home empty-handed. Athletes Lucia Mario and Abraham Majok had spent two years in Japan training for the Olympics and Paralympic games.

It is the second that South Sudan has failed to win any medal. The first was in the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil when the athletes returned home empty-handed.
