Herders agree to return to Jonglei State
Herders from Jonglei State who recently moved to Nimule in search of pasture have agreed to evacuate their cattle back home.
The latest development was reached at a public rally convened by the high-level committee sent by President Salva Kiir Mayardit to look into the security concern in the area.
Delegates from Bor community led by Dr Angok Gabriel Kuol, said the herders were ready to leave the area for the purpose of in the area.
“If the presence of this cattle in this area is the reason why South Sudan will not unite, then from now on, we are taking them back home and we will live to see what else will people talk about”, Dr. Angok said.
The governor of Eastern Equatoria State, Louis Lobong Lojore, said his government was not against people but livestock for destroying crops.
“Even though the constitution says anyone can live anywhere in this country, it doesn’t say you drive your livestock with you to destroy people’s farms,” Lobong stated.
Lobong directed locals to allow herders passage in evacuating their cattle to their places of origin.
The statement from Eastern Equatoria Press stated that 10 trucks of cattle left Nimule yesterday heading to Juba, while livestock from Aswa, Mugali, Melijo and Jelle were moved to Nimule town.
Herders reportedly urged the government and UN agencies to support them with vehicles for transporting cows to Jonglei State, adding that evacuation would be completed by the end of July 2022.
Inspector General of Police, Gen Majak Akech Malok, assured the public that investigation is underway to bring perpetrators to justice.
The team was dispatched to Nimule yesterday to assess the situation in Mugali Payam of Magwi County after over 20 people were killed, 3000 livestock raided and locals displaced after an attack.
