Granade kills three people, wounds seven others in Ayod County

A grenade reportedly killed three children and wounded seven others in Ayod County of Jonglei State on Wednesday.

In an interview with The City Review, Jonglei State Police Commissioner, Maj Gen. Joseph Mayen Akoon confirmed the incident.

He said they had received a report concerning the children killed, but the county commissioner had not given details to the state police headquarter.

“We only received the report that children were killed by a grenade but we have not received details of whether the grenade belonged to a soldier or it was an old one,” he said.

Maj. Gen. Akoon promised to consult the officers involved in the investigation to give details about what triggered the fatal incident.

According to the media report, the explosion occurred at a deserted school in Ayod County. Ayod County Commissioner James Chuol Jiek said the fatal incident occurred at Wau residential area in Ayod.

â€œI received the report about this incident last night at 7 pm. Up to now, we are gathering details on what prompted the incident. Three children died on the spot and seven more are in critical condition,” Chuol said, according to media reports.

Ayod County Police Inspector, Col. Gatjuol Riek Lam, is reported to have said that they had launched an investigation and details were yet to be communicated.

Jonglei State had been experiencing several cases of inter-ethnic fighting which has caused risks to citizens mainly involving landmines and other fatal weapons like grenades and bombs buried in the soil.

Many international organisations had been excavating such risky weapons all over the country.

However, the fact that disarmament has not been done all over the country remains a setback.
