The South Sudan government has announced the date to launch the inoculation drive of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

On Thursday, the national Ministry of Health said the vaccination campaign will commence this week on Friday 08/09/2021.

“The Ministry of Health in collaboration with its partners is set for the official launch of the Johnson and Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine tomorrow Friday, from 9 am to 11 am in Juba,” it said.

According to the organizers, the event will take place in Gudele Block 4 PHCC. The World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the United States will partake in the launch of the vaccination campaign.

Last month, South Sudan received 152,200 doses of Johnson & Johnson. The consignment came as the government had taken the immunization exercise of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine to the state level.

Unlike the AstraZeneca vaccine which is taken twice, Johnson & Johnson is inoculated once.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health reveal that less than half of the total population in the country have been vaccinated with women accounting for low turn up, a situation officials say is driven by misinformation on the side effects of the vaccine.
