Governor Tong tells minister not to appoint chiefs

The governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Tong Akeen Ngor, has directed the minister of local government to freeze unnecessary appointments of chiefs and promotion of administrators.

He said the appointment of chiefs and the promotion of administrators was the mandate of the state council of ministers.

Tong made the statement during the swearing ceremony of the state officials, among them the Minister for Local Government and Law Enforcement, Deng Liai Bak; the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Lual Lual Agau, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Bol Akuar Gamar, the Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) Dut Majokdit Nyikok, the Commissioner of Aweil West County Majok Piol Mayen; and a member of the HIV/AIDS Commission Akur Mou Liai.

Deng Liai Bak, the state minister for local government and law enforcement, said the newly appointed ministers would cooperate with the government to serve the interests of the citizens.

He pledged their support and full cooperation with the state government for the best interests of the people of Northern Bahr el-Ghazal.

Governor Ngor directed the state minister for parliamentary affairs to always coordinate the activities between the legislature and the executive arm of the government.

Also, he urged the minister for youth and sports to promote sports and cultural shows.

Meanwhile, Tong also directed the commissioner of Aweil West County to refrain from border disputes, and promote peace and unity.

Challenges

Early this month, during the swearing-in ceremony of the Reconstituted State Transitional Legislative Assembly, the governor promised to scrutinise the huge number of chiefs who were left out after the country returned to 10 states.

“State government is planning to scrutinise and check the huge number of chiefs in the state without the people they lead. The high committee, which comprises of local government administrators and MPs, will be tasked with looking into this burning issue,” he said.

However, Governor Tong said the state was lacking adequate funds to disseminate peace and security across the state.

“Our challenges in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State are; lack of funds to disseminate peace and establish peace centres in all counties and lack of awareness,” he stated.

“But peaceful coexistence must be nourished, sustained and protected; by providing rule of law, social justice, among other things, to our communities, continuing to create awareness, dissemination of peace and preserve our good relationships with neighbours, “he said.

The governor said that the security situation in his state was the best in the whole country. He encouraged the citizens to be ambassadors of peace and security across Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

“Our security is the best in the country, therefore, we must do more and make use of it to encourage development,” he added.
