Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok of Jonglei State has paid tribute to the men and women of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) who laid down their lives in pursuit of South Sudan’s independence. Speaking during the 42nd SPLA Day anniversary celebrations at Freedom Square in Bor, Governor Riek described their sacrifice as the cornerstone of the nation’s freedom.

“For a country to reach where we are today, lives were laid down,” he said. “It is only fitting that we set aside a day to honor those whose courage and blood gave birth to our sovereignty.”

Governor Riek reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of veterans and the families of fallen heroes. Under the “People First” principle, he noted ongoing efforts to provide structured support systems for widows and children of the deceased soldiers. “Their loss is not theirs alone — we feel it as a nation,” he said.

The commemorative event drew military officers, veterans, civil authorities, and community members in a shared moment of remembrance and national reflection. Veteran Gen. Alfred Manyang likened the soldiers’ ultimate sacrifice to that of Jesus Christ, describing their legacy as both symbolic and sacred to South Sudan’s collective identity.

Division 8 Commander Abraham Gum Makuach applauded the partnership between the state administration and the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), emphasizing the military’s commitment to safeguarding peace and stability.

SPLA Day, observed annually on May 16, honors both fallen and living members of the Armed Forces who contributed to the birth and defense of South Sudan. Governor Riek concluded by urging citizens to carry forward the values of patriotism, unity, and resilience that these heroes embodied.
