The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Augustino Jadallah Wani has called for joint efforts between the Juba City Council and the state Ministry of Health to mitigate the spread of the Cholera outbreak in Juba.

He stressed the need to ensure the practice of good hygiene in public places and homes within Juba.

This came during a joint meeting with the leadership of the Juba City Council and a team from the state Ministry of Health regarding the cholera outbreak in Juba.

Jadallah directed the two authorities to redouble their efforts to mitigate the outbreak of the disease and pledged to provide full support to the country’s leadership to ensure the situation is alleviated.

For his part, Dr. James Wani, Director-General of the State Ministry of Health, said they discussed the formulation of a collective effort between the ministry and the city council in combating the outbreak of the disease.

“In this meeting, we discussed ways to prevent cholera in Central Equatoria State.”

Meanwhile, the Juba City Council Mayor, Johnson Suka Nishak, pledged to intensify efforts to combat the outbreak of the disease in the three blocks of the Juba City Council.

He said that efforts and measures, including widespread public health awareness, are being made to mitigate the outbreak.

“We want to ask our citizens to cooperate and keep their homes clean and restaurants clean,” he said.

“The Ministry of Health is working with us to prevent the spread of cholera,”  Suka said.

Last month,  the National Ministry of Health declared a cholera outbreak in Upper Nile. Since then the disease has spread to six states across the country.

So far close to 200 cases have been reported in Juba and 9 deaths as of December 6, 2024.

On Friday, Dr. Eric Rurangwa, the Incident Manager at the World Health Organization, called on the media to educate the public, saying most citizens are still unaware of the prevalence of Cholera in Juba.

“Now, we have 6 states affected, more than 18 counties, including Juba. The people affected are increasing because of poor hygiene, how we take the sanitation, the wash issues especially for health-seeking behaviour,” Rurangwa said.

On his part, the Director of Health Security Emergency Workforce Development in the national Ministry of Health, Dr. Angelo Goup Thon also called upon the Journalists to be more alert on emergency cases like a disease outbreak and whatever emergency poses hazards to the population.

He urged the media fraternity to be the first people to communicate to the public when there is an emergency,” he said.

“Always talk to authorized people, so that you get more reliable, accurate information.”

On Saturday, Governor Jadalla held a meeting with H.E. Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, the Vice President and Chair of Service Cluster to discuss collaborative efforts in mitigating the cholera outbreak in the State. The meeting also examined measures to combat the outbreak of the disease in some parts of the country such as Upper Nile and Northern Bar El Ghazal States.
