Germany promises support for peace deal and humanitarian crisis response
The German government has pledged its commitment to support South Sudan’s peace implementation and efforts to mitigate the humanitarian crisis.
Prior to her trip to South Sudan and Tanzania, German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Katja Keul, said in a press statement sent to the media that her government wants to continue to support South Sudan in rolling out the 2018 peace deal.
” I will be voicing our expectation that the process of transition is completed rapidly. “German engagement remains necessary, particularly in view of the difficult humanitarian conditions and the human rights situation in the country,” she said.
The minister further said strengthening and expanding dialogue and cooperation with African partners remains an important goal for this federal government, not only because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, but also because of the repercussions far beyond Europe.
“We have maintained close cooperation with Tanzania for 60 years already. We want to build on this foundation and tackle major issues defining the future. However, a true partnership also includes an acknowledgement of our historical responsibility and a reckoning with the crimes committed by Germans during the colonial era. To this end, we will take further concrete steps with the National Museum of Tanzania as part of our museum cooperation, “she added.
She is visiting Tanzania and South Sudan for five days and will be holding political talks with senior government officials, opposition figures and civil society representatives in both countries.
