Ex-Japan Premier succumbs to gun shot wounds

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is dead.

Abe, who is considered one the Japan’s most influential political figures in modern times succumbed to gun shot wounds he suffered during a political campaign.

He was shot, twice by a gunman identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, while giving a speech at political rally.

He collapsed after being shot in the neck and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.

He was pronounced dead about five hours later.

He died at the age of 67.A conservative nationalist, Abe is Japan’s longest serving Premier who twice led the ruling party to victory.

He first ascended to power in 2006, though his reign was marred in scandal. He later made a political comeback in 2012, and stayed in power until 2020 when he resigned for health reasons.

Abe stepped down then after weeks of speculation, revealing that he had suffered a relapse of ulcerative colitis – the intestinal disease had led to his resignation in 2007, writes the BBC.

Born to a political royalty, Abe’s father – Shintaro Abe as well s grandson – Nobusuke Kishi, also served as the Prime Minister for Japan.

“A wonderful person, great democrat and champion of the multilateral world order has passed away. I mourn with his family, his friends and all the people of Japan,” Ursula von der Leyen, President European Union tweeted.

Boris Johnson, the British Premier said: Incredibly sad news about Shinzo Abe. His global leadership through unchartered times will be remembered by many. My thoughts are with his family, friends and the Japanese people. The UK stands with you at this dark and sad time.”
