England dumped Germany at the round 16 of the Euro 2020 tournament to advance to the quarterfinal. The two teams played for a barren draw in the first half, where their defences held firm not giving way to opposing attackers. In the second half, Raheem Sterling tapped in the ball to the net to gift the Three Lions the lead. Substitute Jack Grealish would then feed Harry Kane during the break to double the lead and seal the win for England. Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry were left red-faced ruing the goal scoring chances as the Germans suffered an early exit from the tournament, despite having enjoyed the backing to advance in the tie. England will now face Ukraine who won 2-1 against 10-man Sweden in the extra time to proceed to the quarterfinals. Following Germany’s loss, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has announced his retirement from international football. Kroos retired having amassed 106 caps, which ranks in at position seven in the list of most international appearances made by German players for the national team. He scored 27 goals, where his most famous came against Sweden in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Kroos retires with a world cup trophy to his name.
