At least eleven people were killed and several others injured in deadly inter-communal clashes on Thursday in Awul Payam of Tonj North County, Warrap State.

The violence continued throughout the day as the attackers set fire on Rualbet market and burned several houses in Awul.

Speaking to The City Review, James Ayiek Bath, the State Minister of Information and Communication condemned the violence, describing it as part of a cycle of revenge killings driven by cattle thefts between the Awan and Atok communities.

“This is an unfortunate situation. As the state authority, we condemn it and call for peace. We urge the communities to respect the rule of law and allow investigations to take place.”

“The attack was the result of a long-standing cycle of revenge linked to cattle theft. We do not want further escalation of violence and urge all parties to remain calm,” Ayiek said.

Those who sustained injuries were referred to a hospital in Warrap and Marial Lou for treatment.

Ayiek said the priority is to arrest the criminals and conduct investigations.

“There can be no rule of law in the presence of arms in civilian hands,” he noted.

“Once the president authorizes the operation, we will move to disarm the communities to allow peace and development to flourish.”

In light of the ongoing violence, humanitarian aid agencies have faced difficulties reaching those in need.

Ayiek further said that disarmament would create space for aid organizations to provide necessary services to the vulnerable population. “Disarmament is the key to allowing humanitarian aid agencies to reach those who need help the most,” he said.

“Peace is a priority for all of us. It’s not just the government’s responsibility but everyone’s. Peace starts with individuals and families and extends to society. We must all work together to bring about change,” he stated.
