Decades-old explosive discovered in Budi County

Budi County Commissioner, Akileo Peter Anyanga, has called on the Eastern Equatoria State government to remove the discovered unexploded ordnance in Chukudum town.
This came after the local communities discovered some unexploded ordnance in the area last week.
The UXO was discovered in one of the streams where people fetch water.
The unexploded ordnance discovered is believed to have been under the ground for years during the liberation struggle and failed to detonate.
The matter prompted the County Security Committee to visit the site to inspect the unexploded bomb.
Akileo Mboya Peter, Budi County Commissioner, talked to The City Review and called on the state authorities to intervene and ensure the safety of the surrounding community.
“We went and we have seen the place and what we did was to now make a temporary fence on it and also make an alarm to the communities.
“I have reported it to the State authority because the deminers are not with us here, and that is why I reported this incident to the State authorities such that they can contact the people dealing with these unexploded ordnances because it is causing threat in the community,” said Akileo.
The Commissioner believed the presence of the unexploded ordnance in the area was giving his people sleepless nights due to fear of detonation anytime.
“It is a big threat to the community because it is also a cultivation period, people are trying to prepare their land and such kind of things in a farming area is a threat,” he said.
Akileo informed the community to be vigilant and avoid handling already discovered bombs or any other strange objects.
He urged the community to always report to the authorities each time they see a strange object.
“We are telling our communities that when they come across such kind of an object, they should not tamper [with it]. They have to report immediately that something unique is found in this area or this place such that it is now for us to go and check.
“We continue to tell our people that they should be far away from these kinds of objects, it is a very dangerous thing and we are telling our people not to move closer to those kinds of things,” he said.
