The Jonglei State County Commissioners Forum kicked off in Bor yesterday.

In the three-day meeting, the participants will discuss several issues including inter-communal and revenge killing and how to promote trust and manage inter-county relations, security, and resettlement of the IDPs.

In his opening remarks, Atong Kuol Manyang, the Deputy Governor of Jonglei State, urged the leaders to implement the resolutions that will be agreed upon.

“You all here today to know all the directions of your county and to know all the policies in your counties because during disasters, you are the focal people who are there and that is why I’m feeling very happy to be here today,” said Atong

She called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the resolutions are implemented effectively.

“We also need to see from the previous commissioners’ forum, the things discussed and what has been implemented and what has not been implemented, what else we need to achieve moving forward.”

Gilbert Nantsa, UNMISS representative urged the nine county commissioners to be collaborative while executing their duties.

He said the county commissioners play bigger roles in implementing the government resolutions.

“County commissioners play bigger roles in expending the political environment. UNMISS therefore underscore the need for county commissioners to implement the gubernatorial order on civil and political space and allow all political parties have equal excess to engage with communities on their political program ahead of the upcoming elections,” said Gilbert.

He emphasized that the security forces should priorities security to enhance instability in Jonglei state.

“UNMISS further called for strengthening collaboration between county commissioners, traditional leaders and security institutions to enhance stability in Jonglei state,” said Gilbert.

The Jonglei State County Commissioners Forum is an annual event that brings together key stakeholders to discuss issues of concern to the state. The forum is supported by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

“We also need to see from the previous commissioners’ forum, the things discussed and what has been implemented and what has not been implemented, what else we need to achieve moving forward,” said Atong Kuol Manyang, the Deputy Governor of Jonglei State.
