Civil rights activist calls for humane disarmament in Warrap
A civil rights activist has appealed to the government for the peaceful disarmament of the communities in war-distressed Tonj County, Warrap State.
The Director of Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, alleged that there were already cases of human rights violations by the security officers deployed to restore peace in Rual Biet Payam in Tonj County, Warrap State.
Edmund Yakani said the atrocities committed by the officers in such cases are occasioned by their lack of sense of responsibility and military discipline.
‘‘I appeal to the leaders of forces in Tonj County to ensure that their soldiers adhere to military discipline, carry out their tasks as assigned to the 100 per cent and respect human rights”.
He called on the SSPDF Chief of Staff, Lt.Gen Santino Deng Wol, and Police Inspector Gen. Majak Akech Malok, who are working with the state government to restore peace, to contain the forces so that human rights abuses do not arise.
He further appealed that the results of a probe into violence should be able to be seen, as opposed to the cases of the Twic and Ngok crisis where recommendations of the findings are yet to be implemented..
