A Chinese envoy has called for an accelerated political transition in South Sudan, emphasizing the need for dialogue and restraint as violence intensifies in the Upper Nile region.

Speaking at the UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Sun Lei, stated: “South Sudan is the youngest country in the world, and the political process in the country is not going to be completed overnight.” He urged all political factions to bridge their differences through dialogue and accelerate the implementation of the current peace agreement.

Ambassador Sun also highlighted the importance of respecting South Sudan’s sovereignty and independence, cautioning against illegal and undue interference or pressure from external actors.

He called on the international community to maintain necessary tolerance and patience, support regional mediation efforts, and refrain from actions that could exacerbate tensions.

The deteriorating security situation, particularly in the Upper Nile state, has raised concerns among international observers.

The UN Security Council recently described South Sudan as being “at a turning point,” citing escalating violence, political deadlock, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.  The Council emphasized the need for a renewed commitment to the political transition process.

Ambassador Sun also addressed the regional implications of the ongoing conflict, noting that the instability in neighboring Sudan has led to cross-border movements of armed personnel and the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons.  He urged the international community to support South Sudan in enhancing border control and security capacity building.

In a related development, China has called for the adjustment or lifting of what it considers unreasonable sanctions against South Sudan, arguing that such measures may hinder the country’s development and exacerbate the humanitarian situation.

China reiterated its readiness to work with the international community to play a constructive role in realizing peace, stability, development, and prosperity in South Sudan at an early date.
