CHAN: South Sudan warms up for Ethiopia in CHAN qualifier
South Sudan eyes its first African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against Ethiopia this month.
The Bright Stars will face Ethiopia between July 22 and July 24, 2022, in Tanzania.
According to Michael Daniel, chairman of the club’s national team committee for preparation, some 26 domestic players have already arrived at the camp and participated in the first training session. Others are expected to soon join their teammates from the states.
Head coach Stefano Coach Cusin essentially chose the younger team for the competition to develop the talents of the young boys.
According to Mr. Daniel, the team is expected to play two friendly matches before its first CHAN match against Ethiopia.
It was not clear which team and when the two friendly matches would be played.
But Bright Stars captain, Khamis Lyon, gave a brief address following the workout, noting that everyone was optimistic about performing well in the forthcoming competition.
“We’re all committed to outperforming the Ethiopian squad with a successful outcome. However, what the players need is for their supporters to back them fully so that they can succeed. “
South Sudan will be playing its first leg as an away match between July 22 and July 24, with the return leg slated to run from July 26 to July 27, and August 28, 2022.
The African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals are to be held in Algeria in January 2023.
The winner of the match between South Sudan and Ethiopia will face Rwanda in the second round.
This will be Cusin’s first test as the team’s tactician for the CHAN competition, and fans will be watching to see if he will write a new history or continue the team’s history of underwhelming shows.
South Sudan first competed in CHAN qualifier games in 2017 and advanced to the next stage after defeating Somalia in both home and away games.
The country has never advanced beyond the preliminary round of the competition.
Her most recent appearance was in the 2020 qualifications, where she lost both legs to Burundi, thus concluding in the preliminary round.
The next year’s competition will feature 18 teams instead of the previous 16 positions after the Confederation of African Football agreed to raise the number of competitors.
