The Governor of Jonglei State, Denay Jock Chagor, has pledged a donation of SSP 20 million for the construction of Bor Hospital’s concrete fence.

The fundraising ceremony took place on Saturday in Bor Town, where the state ministries, commissions, the legislative assembly, and individuals contributed money and materials for the aforesaid construction.

The state minister for Health, Atong Kuol Manyang, noted that the contribution pledged by Governor Chagor met 20 per cent of the intended budget for the completion of the fence.

“This is a state project and this generous contribution of more than twenty (20) per cent by the state government will ensure that this becomes a reality.”

She added that 33.5 per cent of the budget had already been pledged and called for support from the national government and individuals living in the diaspora.

“So far, 33.5 per cent of the total required amount has been pledged, and our hope is that Juba and the diaspora will narrow the gap. The committee intends to commence the work by next month with whatever it will have at hand before the rainy season starts, “she added.

Fundraising planned

On March 1, 2022, Atong, stated the state hospital was helpful to patients from Lakes State, the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), and various counties of Jonglei State.

“Bor State Hospital is a referral hospital which receives some patients from Lakes State, the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, as well as from its counties. Its current iron sheet fence was constructed in 2008 through fundraising by the public, “said the Health Minister.

She stressed that the construction of a concrete fence was imperative to keep away intruders whom she classified as mentally ill people, drunkards, criminals, and domestic animals and pets like cows, pigs, goats, and dogs.

She added that the State Ministry of Health could not manage to construct the hospital fence on its own due to robust state priorities including security, salaries, and natural disasters, including the dire consequences of the floods.

On April 30, 2021, the memo for the construction of the concrete fence was presented to the Jonglei State Council of Ministers after which it was approved.
