Cameroon opens AFCON account with victory over COVID-struck Burkina Faso

Hosts Cameroon bounced back from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory against a COVID-19 struck the side of Burkina Faso in the opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gustavo Sangare hit home a fine volley past Andre Onana to put Burkina Faso ahead on the scoreboard, but the solitary strike was not enough to ensure victory.

Cameroon’s Captain Vincent Aboubakar stepped up and converted two penalties to ensure that hosts Cameroon clinched a hard-fought victory at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Yaoundé on Sunday.

Burkina Faso missed the services of their coach Kamou Malo at the touchline, while six players also missed the match after testing positive for the bug.  According to ESPN, a total of 45,000 fans attended the match at the newly built Olembe Stadium in the country’s capital, Yaounde.
