Calm returns to Mundri West after night of gunshots
Calm has returned to Mundri West County, Western Equatoria State, after the heavy gunshots that seized the area on Monday night, police have said.
Residents of Mundri West County were terrified on Monday after heavy gunshots were heard in the Mundri suburbs at night, causing panic among the population.
According to a source who spoke to The City Review anonymously, the situation in the town was still dire, and businesses were closed as residents tried to find out what was going on before returning to their regular routines.
When asked to find out what exactly happened, Col. Phelegon Fraser, Acting Chief Inspector of Police in Mundri West County, said the bullets were fired by criminals who wanted to loot shops in the town.
“The firearms were fired by a gang of criminals who were attempting to scare people into going to the market and looting stores,” he said.
“The security situation in the area is normal and calm right now. Businesses are running smoothly as before because there is nothing to be concerned about,” Fraser added.
According to the police officer, the situation was already under control and those behind the incident were being hunted down by the country’s security apparatus, which promised to bring the criminals to book if identified.
He urged locals to carry on with their daily activities, saying the police and security agencies would continue to protect citizens and their property.
Arrest made
Last week, Mundri police arrested a robbery suspect who claimed that he was searching for his belongings near the Mundri Central Market on Sunday night.
Those who were injured are still in the hospital as the investigation into the incident continues, Col. Fraser revealed.
According to him, the event occurred after the criminals staged an attack on the police station near the major market, and one suspected criminal was injured as a result of the attack.
He also confirmed that people have resumed travelling along Mundri-Rumbek Road after they ceased using it due to last week’s attack along the road by suspected criminals.
Zilipher Dawa, the Commissioner of Mundri West County, advised the public not to interact with anyone involved in such illegal activity in the area.
She urged the locals to report individuals who are committing such crimes to the authorities so that they could be dealt with appropriately.
Dawa said such illegal acts was impeding the country’s growth and delivery of services to the population.
